Mr. Nice Guy Finishes First
Michael Sweeney for Scarborough Downs
April 6, 2014

As Maine’s long winter begrudgingly gives way to spring, the track at Scarborough Downs becomes faster and faster with each passing race day. Mr. Nice Guy took full advantage of the zippy strip to wire the field in Sunday’s $6,000 Free For All event securing the 35th victory of his career in the process.

Kim Ireland, trainer and regular driver of the 9-year-old son of Western Ideal, shook things up in the sulky this week, naming Kevin Switzer, Jr. as his catch driver. Switzer responded by aggressively steering Mr. Nice Guy to early lead, never to look back, as he held off a determined late-stretch charge by Western Victory (Wallace Watson). The mile was timed in 1:57.

In other news: Drew Campbell continued his torrid tempo scoring four wins on Sunday’s card, his second consecutive grand-slam performance. A win in the co-feature Free-for-All Trot was included in Campbell’s Sunday tally as he steered track-record holder, Victory Tax, to a handy score, marking the former Trotter of the Year’s return to the State of Maine following a successful Saratoga swing.

Live racing continues next weekend on a Friday/Saturday/Sunday schedule, all beginning at 1:05 pm.
