Scarborough Downs will kick off its 65th season of racing excitement on Saturday
afternoon (3/28) with post time slated for 4:00 p.m. (EDT) while offering
a ten race program featuring purses in excess of $29,000.
"We made it through a long hard winter here in southern Maine, historically
hard" said race secretary David Sawyer, "but despite the long odds and frozen
conditions, the horsemen came through with an adequate horse population for
Opening Weekend. The mix of local veterans along with a big influx of fresh
new faces should make for fun and competitive racing."
Scarborough's driving colony will remain one of the deepest to be found at
any small market harness track in North America with 2014 Downs driving champion
Drew Campbell joined by the reigning North American UDR pilot, Kevin Switzer,
Jr. in the top two slots.
Returning from a winter stint at Dover Downs, Eddie Davis, Jr.'s familiar red
and white silks will once again grace the seaside oval, to be joined by those
of veteran teamsters like Gary Mosher, Ron Cushing, Chris Long and Dude Goodblood.
On the near horizon, the fans await the mid-spring arrival of the ever popular
David Ingraham and Heath Campbell who have (wisely) wintered in Florida.
Youth will be served on the track by the breakout talents of drivers Dan Deslandes
and Nick Graffam, who will be joined this year by 18-year-old Eric Davis (Eddie's
son), as he becomes the latest generation from the famed racing family to
make his pari-mutuel debut.
Food and beverage specials will delight the fans once they arrive for the
races with a Friday Happy Hour second to none, featuring $2.00 draft beer
specials, $4.00 Jameson Whiskey drinks and $4.00 9-inch pizzas.
Beer and BBQ take center stage on Saturday with more of the popular $2.00
drafts and a delicious $5.00 BBQ chicken dinner while Sunday will surely be
"Fun Day" at the Downs with $1.00 hotdogs, $2.00 drafts and $4.00 Bloody Marys.
Scarborough Downs will feature live harness racing on Saturday at 4:00 with the Sunday matinee swinging into action at 1:30 this season.
