Driver/trainer Kevin Switzer (“The King”) was honored with a special plaque
from Make-A-Wish Maine on May 16 for his contributions last season
that enabled the organization to grant a wish to a child with a life-threatening
medical condition.
Last season, Switzer championed “The King Drives for the Kids” campaign and
donated his driver’s commission for the entire month of June to Make-A-Wish
Maine. Other trainers heard about his cause and added their commissions to
the tally, which totaled over $6,000, enough to grant a wish to one child.
Rebecca Leaming, Make-A-Wish Maine’s Development Manager, presented Switzer
who was joined in the Winner’s Circle by his son, Kevin Switzer, Jr., with
the special plaque, and told him that because of his generous contributions,
a young girl from Old Orchard Beach, who suffers from leukemia, was granted
her lifelong wish to go to Disney. She also read a note from the child’s mother,
thanking Switzer for making her daughter’s wish come true and for bringing
smiles back into their lives.
In honor of the organization, Switzer has just named the newest addition to
his farm, a Maine-bred colt, Let’s Make A Wish, for all the good work it does
for kids. The young horse will begin his racing career in the next two years.
