Nicholas Graffam became the latest in a long line of accomplished horsemen
to grace the Scarborough Downs winner’s circle as the 23-year-old rookie pilot
secured his very first win in only his second appearance as a provisional
driver on Sunday (4/13). (Ed.Note - Graffam got his first career win last
year at Cumberland Fair while driving with a qualifying driver's license).
Born and raised on the historic Norton Farm of Falmouth, Maine, the up-and-comer
hails from the family lineage which includes noted drivers Loring Norton,
Bruce Ranger, Chuck Connors, and his dad, Michael Graffam.
Nick Graffam, driving his own pacer, Samardi Shuttle, secured the second-over
journey just prior to the half then tipped his charge three wide off the final
turn before drawing clear to the wire. The duo lit the board at 60-1 odds,
returning $141.40 to win.
Not to be outdone, Nick’s father, Mike Graffam, secured a win of his own later
in the program, steering Deuces N Eights down victory lane; the elder Graffam,
being greeted by his protégé in the winner’s circle.
In other news, top-rated driver, Drew Campbell, continued on his torrid streak
spinning a grand slam performance from the nine-race card and cementing his
status at the top of the leader’s board.
Sunday’s program was highlighted by the Standardbred Retirement Ceremony,
which was rescheduled from last December, and featured seven racehorses who
went into mandatory retirement at the conclusion of the 2013 season.
Live racing resumes Friday, April 18th; post time for Fridays and Saturdays
reverts to the traditional time of 4 pm; with the Sunday matinee at 1:05 pm.
