Track records continue to fall at Scarborough Downs this season with the latest
standard rewritten on Thursday (6/28) by a 3-year-old trotting filly named Damsel
in the Sand. Owned by Mike Andrew of Gorham, Maine and trained and driven by Ivan
Davies, the daughter of Sand Vic trotted the course on Thursday timed in 2:01.2,
supplanting the previous benchmark of 2:02 established by the Maine-bred All The
Extras back in 2001 who, ironically was also owned by Mike Andrew.
“She’s a New York bred, and we didn’t think she was good enough to race in the
New York sires,” Andrew said. “We brought her up here for some seasoning and she
hasn’t seemed to want to finish the mile, but today she did. She’s a beautiful
filly, she’s well bred, and maybe she’s going to come around.”
In other news, the 2-year-old Maine Sire Stakes season got underway on Thursday
(6/28) featuring the trotting divisions going postward with purses in excess of
$11,800. Counting on Connie (Heath Campbell) won the filly division timed in 2:06.1
for owner/trainer Tony Dearborn of Exeter, Maine, while Edgar’s Brother took top
honors in the colt division, trotting the mile in 2:07.1 for trainer Eric Bickmore
and owner Stephen Hall of Newport, Maine.
Maine Sire Stakes action continues at Scarborough this weekend with the 3-year-old
colt pacers featured on Saturday (4 pm post) with their filly counterparts taking
center stage on Sunday (1:05 pm post).
