Three-year-old fillies took center stage on Sunday (6/24) as the Maine Sire Stakes
program made its second appearance of the season at Scarborough Downs. The sophomore
lasses contested three splits for purses in excess of $11,600 per dash under picture
perfect conditions and a brilliant blue sky.
Call Me The Breeze posted a minor upset in the first Stakes division overpowering
last season's 2-year-old champion Royal Knockout, KO-ing the champ by utilizing
a determined overland bid before pouncing clear toward the wire in a lifetime best
1:57.2 clocking. The daughter of Western Cyclone, owned by Diane Frazier of Kennebunk,
Maine was trained and reigned to victory by Wallace Watson.
Royal Knockout (Michael Graffam) held for the place while Nicki Doodle (Ruel Goodblood,
Jr.) finished third.
In the second Stakes split, Gary Mosher utilized the old give-and-go to his best
advantage as he geared up the filly, Magically, and retook the lead at the 3/8th
pole after allowing Pembroke Cuddles and driver Heath Campbell to drive on to the
early lead. Despite a persistent effort to the wire, Pembroke Cuddles was never
able to overcome the heavily-favored Magically, falling just short of first prize
honors by a scant 1/2-length margin. Magically, who took a new lifetime mark of
1:59.4 in the contest, is conditioned by Eric Bickmore for The Ben Bill & Will
Stable of Carmel, Maine.
Pembroke Cuddles held for the place while Full Explosion (Michael Graffam) finished
third best.
Ashlee's Cool Gal was sent to the post as the prohibitive favorite in Sunday's
final Stakes heat and quickly rewarded her backer's strong support by sprinting
to the early lead, never to look back, as she increased her advantage by progressive
margins at each and every pole. Driven by Mark Athearn for Maine Sports Hall of
Fame trainer Don Richards, the Daughter of Ashlee's Big Guy garnered a brand new
speed standard in a leisurely clocking of 1:59.3 to the delight of co-owners Thomas
Dillon and Walter Hight.
Mega-Ali-Mony (Ron Cushing) was second while Lady Cyclone (Ruel Goodblood, Jr.)
surged to secure the show dough.
Stakes racing resumes at Scarborough Downs on Thursday as the 2-year-old trotting
divisions will kick off their 2012 campaigns. Post time is slated for 4:00 PM (EDT).
