One of the best-liked men to ever compete at Scarborough Downs, driver John Beckwith secured his 1500th career victory on Thursday (6/21). With the Beckwith name being well-known from Maryland to Maine, it was fitting that John would secure this milestone in family-style, driving for his brother Tom, with Muzzys Beachnut.
“It really was just a coincidence that I got this win with Tom’s horse,” said Beckwith, “but it feels nice. When we came off the last turn, I thought I had it, but I wasn’t 100% sure because this particular horse doesn’t have a lot of experience with winning. I don’t really remember much about my first win, but I’ll remember this one.”
In other news: The 2012 Maine Sire Stakes season kicks off this weekend at Scarborough Downs as the three-year-old pacing colts invade the Seaside Oval on Saturday (6/23, post time 4 pm), while the sophomore fillies take center stage on Sunday (6/24, post time 1:05 pm). Purses will exceed $11,000.
