In light of recent developments regarding an outbreak of the equine disease known
as "strangles" at Saratoga Raceway (New York), Scarborough Downs will immediately
implement the following policies regarding all horses entering to race or desiring
to be stabled at the track:
1. All out of state horses must present a current health certificate before being
granted admission to the paddock or the grounds.
2. All horses shipping in to race will be subject to an inspection conducted by
Dr. Zack Matzkin (State Veterinarian) before being allowed into the paddock.
3. Effective immediately, those horses that have raced at or have resided at Saratoga
Harness Race Track since March 1, 2012, are required to have proof of negative
strangles culture. Negative test results must be provided to Scarborough Downs
Race Secretary before these horses will be allowed entry into the race paddock.
Trainers who fail to provide this documentation will have their horses scratched.
4. Although Scarborough Downs does not currently require the strangles vaccine,
horsemen are encouraged to consult their veterinarians regarding available vaccinations
and/or swab tests.
Scarborough Downs will continue to monitor the current situation and will react
with all proper caution and concern. These guidelines have been established to
help safeguard the horse population at Scarborough Downs and in southern Maine.
We thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
