Rodeo Du Ruisseau took advantage of a pocket trip and overcame Shady Sabrina deep in the
stretch to take the Free For All division at Scarborough Downs in a track record time of
1:54.0.
The feature race on the undercard of The Joe Ricci Trot day at Scarborough started as a
speed duel, which saw Rodeo Du Ruisseau (Drew Campbell) take the lead at the eighth pole
from P H Dreamer (Jim Hardy). The Queen of Maine racing, Shady Sabrina (Kevin Switzer)
who was three wide in the first turn, then took command of the race up the backside
first time around and hit the quarter at a fast :27.1.
Shady Sabrina didn't get much of a rest as Mystical Delight (Shawn Gray) pulled in the
second turn to battle the leader and had the lead by a length on the outside at the half
in :56.4. That lead would evaporate in the the turn as Shady Sabrina found another
gear and recaptured the lead by the 5/8th pole. Those two battled ferociously to
three quarters in 1:25.0 with Rodeo Du Ruisseau on Switzer's helmet.
Mystical Delight faded at 7/8ths after his grueling trip which opened the door for Rodeo
Du Ruisseau, who slingshot out and wore down Shady Sabrina deep in the stretch, getting
to the wire ahead of the Queen by only the whiskers on his chin.
Mystical Delight held on for third and Mr Nice Guy (Kim Ireland) overcame traffic
issues from the back of the pack to finish fourth. Dream Well (Charlene Cushing)
and P H Dreamer rounded out the field.
Rodeo Du Ruisseau is an eight year old gelding owned by Sharon Spaulding and trained
by Dick Robertson, Sr. He was a recent claim at Scarborough for $15,000.
The 1:54.0 clocking was a new track record for aged geldings, previously held by Ideal
Conditions (1:54.1). It also sits as the second fastest mile ever paced at Scarborough,
which as been done on two previous occasions. Prince Ebony (Ron Pierce) won the 1990
Presidents Pace in 1:54.0 and On The Tear (Shawn Gray) matched it last year in the Mid
Summer Classic.
