Kevin Switzer, Jr. made his first appearance on a Maine
racing oval today as he steered four mounts around Historic Bangor
Raceway. Switzer, Jr. has been missing due to problems first
arising from his New York license.
Switzer, Jr. is also on the list of five drivers that violated
Maine racing rule 17 section 3.2 for which they attained
over $2,000 in fines over the course of the previous two
years. Drew Campbell, Rob Dinning and Alex MacDonald were
all given lengthy suspensions due to this violation. Dinning
is back in the sulky as he appealed the ruling and may drive
due to a stay of the suspension until the case is reviewed.
Henry Jackson, executive director of the Maine State Harness
Racing Commission had this to say concerning Switzer's
return.
"Kevin Switzer, Jr. has made application for owner/driver
license for 2010. He has now cleared up the problem he had
in New York, so now he is eligible for license here in
Maine. Like the other individuals who have applied, he can
operate on his 2009 license until the commission takes final
action on his 2010 application, which will be scheduled in
July's meeting."
Switzer was very happy to get back in the sulky and relieved
that one hurdle has been cleared to getting back to driving
full time.
A winner of 427 races in just seven seasons, last year was
his most successful, with 188 wins and over $500,000 in
earnings.
