The statisticians and historians have been kept on constant alert this season as track record after track record continues to tumble. The latest top performer, Katahdin Boy, etched his name in stone on Sunday afternoon (8/29), becoming the fastest 3-year-old colt in the 60-year history of Scarborough Downs.
The sophomore son of Computer Scooter, ably piloted by leading driver Shawn Gray, made every pole a winning one in his record-breaking circumnavigation of Scarborough’s historic half mile oval, timed in 1:56 flat; thereby shaving 3/5 of a second off the longstanding benchmark established by LLYR during the 2006 season.
Katahdin Boy’s victory came in a $9,053 split of the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stake races held at the track. The win marked his 11th trip down victory lane from 14 lifetime starts, pushing his career bankroll over the $55,000 mark.
Katahdin Boy is owned in partnership by Linwood Higgins of Scarborough, and Thomas Perkins of Blue Hill. He is trained by David Cochere.
The other stake winner on the day’s card was Hooper (Ivan Davies).
The summer of speed continues at Scarborough Downs on Thursday (9/2) and features Maine Standardbred Breeders Stake 2-year-old colt and filly trotters out on the track. Post time is 4 pm.
