The Maine Sire Stakes returned to Scarborough Downs on Friday (7/2), showcasing the 2-year-old filly pacing division, three splits of fillies racing for purses in excess of $28,000. Twenty-six rookie fillies came to the raceway but only three could parade victorious. All three winners scored impressive open-length victories.
Barbra Ann and Maeve came forth from the powerful KDK Standardbreds stable, giving driver/trainer Kevin Switzer double the pleasure in the star-studded stakes program.
Barbra Ann, daughter of Goin To The Beach, took a new lifetime mark of 2:01.1, while her
stable mate, Maeve, daughter of Veeza, also laid claim to a new speed standard; this one in 2:03.
Magic Card delivered the fireworks in the final stakes dash with veteran teamster Leigh Fitch calling the shots for the Gordon Corey Stable. This 2-year-old daughter of Veeza is owned and bred by the Winback Farm. Magic Card remains undefeated in her young career, now having scored her third consecutive victory in a lifetime best of 2:01.4.
Sire Stakes action returns to Scarborough Downs on Thursday, July 8th -- the 3-year-old trotters take to the Seaside Oval. Post time: 4 pm.
