Two-time Scarborough Downs defending driving champion, Drew Campbell, returned to action Thursday afternoon (7/1) after a three-month absence and picked up right where he left off, absolutely dominating the local driving colony, scoring four wins from the 8-race program.
The Maine Harness Racing Commission had revoked Campbell’s driving privileges earlier this season, based on a longstanding yet seldom invoked rule which mandates that drivers who accumulate excessive fines over a 2-year period be set down.
Campbell was ready to rumble fresh off the shelf as he regained the raceway for the first time since April. Showing no signs of rust whatsoever Campbell quickly reclaimed “top stick” status.
“That really felt great,” said Campbell after his first win. “It’s been a long time coming and it’s great to be back.”
“The Scarborough faithful have come to expect outstanding performances from Drew Campbell and multiple-win days are not out of the norm,” said track announcer, Mike Sweeney. “However, to see Drew come back so sharp after such a long absence speaks volumes to his incredible driving talents.”
Live racing continues at the Downs on Friday 7/2 and features Sire Stakes action with 2-year-old filly pacers out on the track. Post time 4 pm.
