Four divisions of the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes produced lifetime marks for each winner during the Sunday afternoon card at Scarborough Downs.

The third leg of the season for two-year-old pacing colts split into a pair of divisions. In the first one, Logan’s Lightning (Jason Bartlett) grabbed the lead during the opening panel and got every call the rest of the way. The colt finished a length and half better than Pembroke Deluxe (Heath Campbell) with Wounded Solder (Dylan Davis) picking up the show spot in the 2:04.4 mile. Logan’s Lightning is owned and trained by Galen Dempsey of Tower Hill, New Brunswick.

In the second division for freshman colts, Pembroke Touch (Heath Campbell) took control during the third quarter and cruised to his third consecutive stakes triumph in 2:02.4. Dapper Yapper Doo (Kim Ireland) and Rollin’ West (Mike Graffam) rallied to finish second and third respectively. Pembroke Touch is owned by Bill Varney of Bangor and is trained by Valerie Grondin.

Two groups of three-year-old colt pacers were up next, and in the first division KDK Bellagio (Kevin Switzer) fired out of the pocket in the stretch to record his first stakes victory of the season. The front running favorite Dragon’s Descent (Owen Davies) held on for the place spot, while Billy Biltmore (Heath Campbell) closed for the show position. KDK Bellagio is owned by the KDK Standardbreds of Cumberland Center, Maine and is trained by Robert Marston.

The final sire stake event of the day featured a cavalry charge off the starting gate, and the field was four abreast for much of the opening quarter. When the dust settled Pembroke Cushy (Heath Campbell) had a lead he would never relinquish, as he wired the field in 1:58.4. The pocket sitting Sammy Neutron (Jason Bartlett) tried the front runner but could do no better than second, while Oh Happy Days (Drew Campbell) rallied for third. Pembroke Cushy is also owned and trained by the combination of Bill Varney and Valerie Grondin.

The Campbell brothers, Drew and Heath, won six of the twelve races on the Scarborough program.

In the annual Anah Temple Shrine Trot held at Bangor Raceway on Sunday, Bill Varney handled the reins himself and Stars Photo notched his second consecutive victory in 2:00 flat. Classic Andy (Dirk Duncan) was second, while Balanced Serenade (Don Richards) finished third.

Next week both Bangor Raceway and Scarborough Downs put on their feature events of the season. On Saturday evening Scarborough will present the $25,000 Joseph Ricci Memorial Trot which will feature the finest trotters is Maine. On Sunday afternoon Bangor Raceway will host the annual Paul Bunyan Invitational, which will be contested for a $10,000 purse and will include some of the finest pacers in the New England area.
